Road freight — the most flexible, and the connecting leg of every mode
Trucks and container trucks go door to door, with multiple delivery points and flexible schedules. Road is also the first and last leg of the other three modes — the quality of the trucking leg determines whether the whole route runs on time.
West — roads linking to Laos, Cambodia and the border gates.
When to choose
- Short and medium-haul legs, delivery to the door
- Multiple pickup and delivery points
- Connecting legs to ports, stations and airports
- Crossing land border gates
- Oversized and overweight cargo — with road permits and a route survey
Not suitable when
- Very long routes with steady heavy cargo — consider rail or inland waterway
- Oversized and heavy-lift cargo before bridges, roads and turning points have been surveyed
Which points the cargo passes through
Documents usually required
- Transport contract / consignment note
- Invoice, warehouse issue note
- Cross-border: customs declaration and vehicle documents as required
- Oversized and overweight cargo: vehicle road permit
Reference list; specific requirements depend on the cargo, the route and current regulations.
Watch-outs to avoid extra costs
- Survey the route before quoting heavy or oversized cargo
- Border-gate infrastructure fees and waiting time at the inspection yard
- The cost of the empty return trip is included in the trip price
